Safety comes first
spareachair is about talking with strangers, so we built the rules in from the start. Here’s what we do, and what we don’t claim.
Verified adults, 18+
Every participant is 18+ and ID-verified before joining an Evening. A specialist provider checks an ID document and a selfie. We keep the result, not your documents. One person, one verified account.
EU/EEA only at launch
At launch, spareachair is open to people living in the EU or the wider European Economic Area (Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway). Your data is handled under EU data protection law (GDPR).
No random roulette
There’s no random one-to-one video with strangers. You talk at scheduled Evenings, at tables of 4–6, with people who are verified like you. A one-to-one call only happens between two people who both chose to keep in touch, and both accepted the call.
Camera off by default, video by consent
Mic and camera are off by default. You choose if and when to turn them on. You only see someone’s video if you choose to, and they only see yours if they choose to.
Chat is text only: no images, files or link previews at launch.
Block and report everywhere
Block and report are one tap away at every table, in messages, during calls and on profiles. A report includes the last messages of that conversation so moderators have context. If you block someone, you won’t be seated with them again and they can’t contact you.
Moderation by people, with help from software
Automated moderation may hold back messages that clearly break the rules. Our moderators review every report. We usually go step by step (warn, suspend, ban), and we tell you what we decided and why. You can appeal.
Bans stick
Because accounts are tied to a verified identity, people who are banned can’t simply sign up again with a new email address.
No recordings
We don’t record audio or video. Recording other people without their consent is against our Community Guidelines.
What we don’t promise
No system makes talking to strangers risk-free, and we won’t pretend ours does. If something feels wrong, leave the table, block or report. We’ll look at every report.
